Factors affecting the life of injection molds

08-04-2024

The life of an injection mold refers to the total number of products that can be processed by the injection mold while ensuring the quality of the product parts being processed. It includes the life after multiple grindings of the working surface and replacement of wearing parts.

The reasons that affect the life of injection molds are:

1) The working status of the injection mold.

When the injection mold is working, the accuracy and stiffness of the equipment used, the lubrication conditions, the pretreatment status of the material being processed, the preheating and cooling conditions of the mold, etc. all have an impact on the life of the injection mold. For example, precision blanking of thin materials is particularly sensitive to the pressure and stiffness of the press. A press with high precision and high stiffness must be selected to achieve good results.

2) Injection mold processing quality.

Defects produced during the processing and heat treatment of injection mold parts will affect the life of the injection mold. For example: residual knife marks on the surface of the injection mold, microcracks caused by EDM, surface carburizing powder and decarburization during heat treatment, etc., all have an impact on the load-bearing capacity and life of the injection mold.

3) Condition of product parts.

The surface quality, material hardness, elongation and other mechanical properties of the parts processed by the defendant, as well as the dimensional accuracy of the parts being processed, are all directly related to the life of the injection mold. For example, a special synthetic form with a mass fraction of 80% nickel can easily bite strongly with the working surface of the injection mold, causing the working surface to bite and roughen, which directly affects whether the injection mold can work normally.

4) Injection mold materials.

Injection mold materials should be selected according to the production program being produced. For large production batches, high-performance injection mold materials with strong load-bearing capacity and good resistance to fatigue damage should be selected.

5) Injection mold structure.

A reasonable injection mold structure can help improve the load-bearing capacity of the injection mold and reduce the thermal and mechanical load on the injection mold. A reliable injection mold guide mechanism can prevent the punch and concave molds from biting each other; the cold piers and cold extrusion molds that bear high-intensity loads can prevent stress concentration by changing the cross-sectional dimensions.injection mold manufacturing
